N.b. This is incorrectly noted as a two pence in the biographies section of the UK hardback edition of the book (2006). All other information given in the biography (pp.241-42) is correct.

Events

Used on a letter to Borchard at Bordeaux.
1865
Found by Madame Borchard, along with XII. Both stamps were acquired by the dealer Madame Desbois.
1866
Madame Desbois sold the stamps to one of Bordeaux’s major stamp collectors, Émile Lalanne.
1893
Piet Lataudrie bought Lalanne’s collection through the agency of Marcel Pouget for Fr.60,000 (£2,400) in July.
1896
E. Mors, of motor-racing fame, bought both stamps (XI and XII) for Fr.42,000 (£1,600).
1920
Both stamps (XI and XII) were bought by the French dealer and collector Théodore Champion.

Some time before 1940, Champion sold XI only to an anonymous collector.
1988
Auctioned by Hervé-Chayette Laurence Calmels, Paris, for Fr.1,019,405 (£97,086).
1992
Auctioned by Harmers of London and sold to a German collector for £198,000.
