"Sometimes I wondered whether it was something emanating from those fantastic lonely mountains; sometimes if it was not simply some peculiar quality of Island light which was soft, yet radiant. The Pouce and the weird peaks beyond, of Pieter Both were often veiled in a tenuous vapour which trailed slowly down over the woods, across the city and out to sea. They passed somehow like sighs shedding a small rain but hardly obscuring the sun."
